Jojos and Groundies

I had a strange conversation with a co-worker the other day that went something like this …

Liz: “I could really go for a cookie right now!  Not sure why but I have a sweet tooth craving!”

Me: “I’ve got a bag of peanuts if you want it … pretty sure that won’t help though.”

***I walk downstairs to talk to another co-worker***

Stephanie: “Hey Matt!  Want some fried chicken and jojos?!”

Me: “Oh shoot!  I have to call Liz!”

Me: “Liz!  I have jojos!  It’s a miracle!  Come downstairs ASAP!”

Liz: “I’m not really craving jojos right now … but let me know if you find a cookie.”

Me: “Wait what?!  What are you talking about?!  Jojos are cookies!”

Stephanie:  “Matt. … jojos are potatoes…”

Last week was the first time I had ever heard the term jojos in reference to fried potato wedges!  When I hear jojos, my mind instantly goes to Trader Joe’s version of Oreos.  After doing some research, I’ve learned that jojos are a regional PNW thing.  Since I grew up in Colorado with New Yorker parents, it makes a lot of sense that I’ve never heard of them before.

On a similar note, groundies was our go to neighborhood game growing up.  We played it pretty much every day after school all throughout elementary and junior high.  If you don’t know what groundies is, it’s essentially a mix between “the floor is lava” game and tag … except that the tagger isn’t allowed to see (it’s a really safe game).   When I showed up to college freshmen year I remember casually suggesting that we play some groundies.  Literally every person on my floor looked at me like I was crazy.

Jojos and groundies got me thinking about the things we accept as norms.  So much of normal has to do with the way we were raised.  I think that a huge part of life is all about breaking these paradigms and learning to see the world in a new way.  On that note I suggest that you eat some jojos, play some groundies, and try out a new normal!

Life and Matt

  2. You actually make it seem so easy along with your presentation but I to find this matter to be actually something which I believe I’d never understand. It sort of feels too complex and very extensive for me. I’m looking forward to your subsequent put up, I will attempt to get the dangle of it!
